Man Enough to Be a Woman
Author(s): Jayne County with Rupert Smith
Remember Wayne County and the Electric Chairs? Long before drag queens dominated the media, before gender-bending, before punk, even before Stonewall, there was W/Jayne County. From the '60s to the '90s she's been the craziest, the most extreme queen ever to hit a rock 'n' roll stage. She's known and worked with Warhol, Bowie and Derek Jarman, been an actress, a singer and a prostitute. She's the world's original and only rock 'n' roll transsexual, crossing the genders in the full glare of publicity. Man Enough to be a Woman is the wild, hilarious and shameless account of Jayne's life from her cissy-boy childhood in Georgia to her '90s renaissance as a new wave of superstars claim her as their inspiration.
Born in rural Georgia in 1947, Jayne moved to New York and became part of the 60s art scene surrounding Andy Warhol's Factory. Jayne's story follows the arc of LGBT liberation in the US - she came of age living hand-to-mouth, faced off against police at Stonewall and came out as a trans woman while she was touring Europe with her band. She went everywhere and met everyone and lived to tell the tale. Man Enough to Be a Woman is the funny, fierce memoir of Jayne's extraordinary journey, now including a new epilogue where she reflects on how the world has (almost) caught up with her.
