Cy Twombly - Photographs
|Author:||Edmund De Waal|
Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Gagosian Gallery locations in Beverly Hills, London and New York in 2012, ‘Cy Twombly – Photographs’ documents the artist’s lesser known artworks based on Polaroids, a surprising contrast to his large-scale, freely scribbled, calligraphic-style graffiti paintings. These large, blurry colour images of tulips, trees, cemeteries, beaches and various small objects show a different side of Twombly, a more direct visualisation of his relationship with the physical world – and his presence in it – as discerned through his own eyes. The photographs span more than 50 years of his life, their tangible aura engaging both memory and nostalgia.
